Ingredients

For the Tuna Filling
  • 1 Can Tuna (drained)
  • 1-2 tbsp Mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Mustard (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Finely chopped onion or spring onion
  • 1 tbsp Sweetcorn (optional)
  • A squeeze of lemon juice Salt & black pepper, to taste
For the Toastie
  • 2 slices Bread (white, brown, whole wheat, or sourdough)
  • 1 slice Cheddar
  • Swiss, or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tbsp Butter (for the bread) Optional add-ins
  • 1 slice tomato, pickles, jalapeรฑos, or extra cheese

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or fork
  • Frying pan or skillet Spatula
  • Butter knife
  • Sandwich press (optional)

Method

  1. Make the tuna filling:

In a bowl, combine tuna, mayonnaise, mustard (if using), chopped onion, sweetcorn, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix until creamy and well blended.

  2. Prepare the bread:

Butter one side of each bread slice โ€” this will be the outside for toasting.

  3. Assemble the toastie:

Place one slice of bread, buttered side down. Add a layer of cheese. Spoon the tuna mixture evenly over the cheese. Add optional extras like tomato, pickles, or more cheese. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.

  4. Toast the sandwich:

Heat a frying pan over medium heat.

Place the toastie in the pan and cook for 3โ€“4 minutes each side, pressing gently with a spatula until golden and the cheese has melted.

Or use a sandwich press for an easy, evenly melted toastie.

  5. Serve:

Slice and enjoy warm, cheesy, and perfectly toasted!

Notes

ย

  • Add extra cheese for a stronger, gooier melt.
  • Use light mayo or Greek yogurt for a lighter filling.
  • Add a pinch of paprika or garlic powder for extra flavour.
  • Works great with canned tuna in brine, spring water, or oil (drain well).
  • For crunch, add chopped celery or pickles into the tuna mix.
